Let Them Doubt

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through being here at BYU, it’s that life doesn’t always work out the way we want or plan. Coming in as a freshman I had high hopes of quickly earning a starting spot and fulfilling my dream as BYU’s starting keeper. But those hopes were quickly put in check as I battled injury and pain, and right bench instead of starter. However, this post isn’t meant to be a sob story, and in my eyes it isn’t. Instead, when I look back at my years wearing a cougar uniform, I see courage and determination. I see the lessons it taught me and the person I’ve become as a result of it. I’ve learned through this process, that “believing” in someone or something has power. Numerous times throughout my soccer career I’ve been told “I can’t” do something, or that “It’s time to move on.” Injuries and rejection have left me fighting doubts from myself and others. But I’ve learned that doubting doesn’t get us anywhere. Instead it leaves us feeling hopeless and stuck. My favorite quote that I keep by my bed is this, “No matter how impossible it all may seem, never underestimate the power of a dream.” If I had one piece of advice it would be this, “DREAM BIG.” Don’t limit yourself to mediocrity. Pick a dream and commit full belief in it. You may reach your dream, and you may not, but you will find that in the end, you have become exactly the person you are meant to be. Choose to believe and dream big. And when people say you can’t, I challenge you to scream, “Let them doubt!”
Cassidy Smith is a current Brigham Young University Woman's Soccer Goalkeeper. She has been training with BetterGoalkeeping since the age of 10 and is currently on her final year playing at BYU in 2020. Cassidy has always had one thing that stands above everyone else and thats her determination to fight for what she wants and to not stop no matter what obstacle she faces. I have been privileged to be a part of her amazing journey as a goalkeeper and see her over come constant obstacles such as injuries to continue the fight. Cassidy Smith grew up in Utah training as a goalkeeper while playing for Celtic Storm Soccer Club.
